In the 1840s, the companys chairman, Francis Darby, began developing lines of decorative furniture, designed in the ornate styles of the Renaissance, Gothic Revival and Rococo periods. Given its strength and resistance to rust, cast iron was ideal for the outdoors and for certain types of hall furniture.
It was more economical to manufacture than wrought iron and featured at Londons Great Exhibition of 1851. Queen Victoria herself became a client. The incredibly intricate design work briefly comprises of having 5 coat and hat double hooks with foliate shell accents, tear drop shaped umbrella holders, intricate pierced design to front and 2 shell shaped, removable umbrella / stick trays to base, all supported on 3 twisted columns. The stand is fully stamped (see detailed pictures) - Diamond registration mark to underside of removable shells - Diamond registration mark to rear of front - N0.19 stamp to rear of front - Registration mark'C-B-DALE Co to rear - along with underside of base stamp No. This hall stand is illustrated in the 1875 Coalbrookdale catalogue section II, page 223 No 119. In totally original condition - lovely patina / wear in all the right places - some surface corrosion to underside of base and a few lower underside edges but overall pretty amazing for approx. Please see detailed pictures for overall condition - no breaks / repairs anywhere - any inspection welcome - please feel free to arrange a viewing. Dimensions: approx: HEIGHT: 194cm - WIDTH: 72cm - DEPTH: 34cm.
